I was recently challenged with removing these tremendous shrubs from our side yard area. Buffalo junipers perhaps? A beautiful green ground cover when first planted, but soon to be a fast-encroaching incredibly spiky "weed" that will slowly grow annoying and then, when attempting to pull them out, resist you until the bitter end. After some time suffering and struggling...shears...trimmers...prying with shovel...here's what worked: dig a "trench" all around the roots with your shovel, then grab a saw, long blades, and extension cord and cut through the roots (don't forget to call before you dig to locate any lines/pipes!). Saved myself hours with this method!
